Welcome to Q&A From the Trenches! Every week we take your questions on building a resume, interviewing, searching for jobs – ask us anything!
QUESTION: I’m looking forward to the holidays and gatherings with family and friends. But I am NOT looking forward to the endless questions of “How’s the job search going?” and “You haven’t been able to get a job yet?!” How can I respond and not seem rude, while still letting people know I am still searching?
You’re right – you should let your family and friends know you are indeed still on the hunt. Keep open to opportunities – millions found their jobs through connections. The holidays are a good time to reconnect. You never know with whom Uncle Bob recently did business – there could be a position for which you’d be a great match, and he can put in a good word! Let others know you’re looking, and welcome job prospects and new connections.
While you can’t avoid the question, don’t get discouraged when asked. Your cousin doesn’t necessarily know your situation, or maybe your grandmother doesn’t understand today’s challenging job market. You don’t need to go into a full explanation of your search, but help put them at ease that you are in the process. Answer, letting them know that yes, you are still looking, and segue to another topic.
Grandma: What? You STILL don’t have a job?
You: Yep, still looking! But speaking of jobs, I heard cousin Jeannie got a promotion – and a raise! Isn’t that great? I heard she might be moving – I hope she’ll be able to come to Thanksgiving next year!
That’ll get Grandma going!
Prepare yourself: when attending holiday events, these types of questions will arise; if you’re expecting them and have an answer, you won’t be taken by surprise. Arm yourself with a witty anecdote or let them know how it’s actually going. Assure them that you do have a strategy and plan. They may be able to offer assistance!
Uncle Phil: So, how’s the job search going?
You: Funny you should ask – I applied to the CRAZIEST job last week! Listen to this job description…
OR:
You: It could be better – but I did have an interview a little while ago – and I wiped out in a pothole on my way in. Twisted my ankle and had to LIMP in! It was the worst.
You, of course, don’t need to use these examples – be honest! Add levity to your job-hunting adventures. It’ll lighten a touchy subject – and give you a more positive outlook.
While you’re out of work, keep current on training; consider obtaining certification in your field, or in a software package. Fill your time with activities that can be valuable on your resume – volunteer or take on an internship. Consult for a friend. Reevaluate your resume (and your online LinkedIn profile!) and perform adjustments to make yourself a more solid candidate. These activities are great conversation fodder for holiday gatherings – and it shows that you’re active and busy, and striving to better your chances of new employment.
It’s challenging during the holiday season to stay positive and productive in your job search. You’re not alone. Take some personal time for yourself if you need it; a small break can help you refocus.
